Of course all charitable organizations appreciate your support during the holiday season, but many focus specifically on this time of year, helping families enjoy a holiday that they might not otherwise afford.
The Salvation Army begins their annual Christmas Kettle campaign today, with volunteer bell-ringers deployed throughout the country at storefronts and streetcorners. It may seem like pocket change, but this drive accounts for a significant percentage of the organization's funds for the year - in some communities upwards of 25%. The money supports services include the food bank, helping with emergency accommodations, and assisting families that have to travel for medical purposes or need help with prescription drugs. The Salvation Army is the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in Canada.
The organization is still looking for volunteers to stand at kettles, and of course welcomes your cash donations as you pass the bell-ringers.
The largest local effort is the Barrie and District Christmas Cheer Campaign. This year they expect to help more than 4,500 people with the distribution of 1,800 food hampers and thousands of toys. There are many ways you can help out, by donating gifts, food, money and/or time. Click here for a list of items in high demand.
The AIDS Committee of Simcoe County hosts an Adopt-A-Family program, inviting businesses, organizations or individuals to sponsor a holiday hamper for people in need who are affected by HIV/AIDS.
Christmas is an especially difficult time for families who have had to leave their homes. The Barrie Women & Children's Shelter endeavours to make the holidays happy for their residents, and you can help through the donation of Christmas gifts as well as basic necessities like clothing, toiletries and food. Household items are also very much appreciated for families beginning new lives outside the shelter.
Throughout the winter months, Barrie Out of the Cold provides shelter to the homeless to keep them off the streets at night and to provide them with a hot dinner and breakfast. Six local churches generously provide space, and the OOTC program procures food, clothing and other basic necessities. Click here to find out what their needs are and how to donate.

Though it’s not the holidays anymore, I'll still comment on it. Making a difference is a big factor because it is something some people will notice. Something that is not used to the system is what's very noticeable.
